An Example of Heroic Courage

In this rendition of an incident from the Vendée rebellion, an ordinary woman is shown standing up to the rebels. It comes from a series of heroic images of the Revolution and shows that women could be heroines for the Republic.

Des brigands de la Vendée, s’étant rendus maîtres de Saint-Mithier, entrèrent dans une maison pour y exercer leur scélératesse ; ils furent surpris d’y trouver une femme entourée de ses enfants, assise tranquillement dans sa boutique près d’un baril de poudre, tenant deux pistolets à la main, dans la ferme résolution de faire sauter sa maison et toute sa famille, plutot que de tomber au pouvoir de ces forcenés. Son courage et cette mâle contenance leur en impofèrent, et son asile fut respecté. Se trouve chez le Cit. Pézard, M[archan]d d’Estampes, rue Jacques no. 64 à Paris. Et chez le Cit. Cazenave, graveur, même rue no. 13.

Some brigands from the Vendée, having made themselves masters of Saint-Mithier, entered a house to exercise their wickedness; they were surprised to find a woman surrounded by her children, sitting calmly in her shop near a barrel of powder, holding two pistols in the firm resolution to blow up her house and all her family rather than concede to the power of these madmen. Her courage and manly countenance impressed them, and her sanctuary was respected. . . .
