Working from the common database of forty-two images,
seven scholars offered their own analyses of the depiction of the
Revolutionary crowd. Authors selected and developed what they viewed
as the most important themes and questions emerging from these
images. An online discussion, (see the discussion section)
provided the opportunity for debate and interchange among these
scholars.
Profiting from these discussions, several of the essayists returned
their works as they are now presented here. Excerpts from the discussions
are also available in some essays, indicated by the icon labled
“Further Discussion.” (See the introductory
essay for
a more detailed discussion of the development of the project.)
The introductory and concluding essays, both by Censer and Hunt
are presented separately because the intent is that the material
in the conclusions will be more comprehensible after considering
the substatitive essays.
